Last term saw the second annual Autumn Rugby Tournament at Ysgol Penmaes. After the success of last year’s competition the spirits were high as the weather looked bleak. With 12 schools attending and 180 pupils participating on the day the weather was not going to stop play. As the children enjoyed the morning session of skills, coached by the students of Coleg Powys and Brecon High School spirits were high and the smiles on the children’s faces were a joy to see. Pupils from the local schools mixed with pupils from special needs schools showing fantastic friendship and camaraderie.
The afternoon session kicked of with all schools participating in a tag rugby competition. The weather continued to be bad as the children displayed both tremendous spirit and skill in poor conditions. The competition continued and during a break in the weather the Cardiff Blues mascots Bruiser and Bluebell made a welcome appearance and lifted everyone’s spirits.
As the competition drew to an end, the weather improved and the sun came out for the final between Mount Street Juniors and last year’s finalists Llanfaes. With all the teams supporting from the sidelines it was a superb final. Each team showed great skill and pace to score a number of tries, and with the whistle taking the final into extra time, it was Mount Street who scored the golden try to take the title of Ysgol Penmaes Rugby Champions 2010.
Organiser Tom Jones would like to that everyone who helped on the day and for Brecon RFC for the donations of their facilities for the day. We look forward to seeing you all next year.
