Croeso i Penmaes / Welcome to Penmaes

On behalf of our pupils, staff and governors I would like to take this opportunity of welcoming you to our website.

Ysgol Penmaes, situated in the Cathedral town of Brecon, is a busy, forward-looking school that provides education and specialist facilities for pupils with a wide range of learning difficulties.

The new Penmaes campus, which was completed in September 2006, includes a purpose built school, a 3 bed respite unit (Golwg Y Camlas) and a 6 bed residential unit (Golwg Y Bannau). These integrated facilities provide pupils with the very best learning opportunities and resources which support the school’s vision to become a Centre of Excellence.

We are committed to a “TEAM” ethos (Together Everyone Achieves More) which guides all aspects of our work. Learning Opportunities promote independence and ownership of learning, whilst encouraging and nurturing pupils to achieve their full potential.

I hope that our website gives you some insight into our work but having said this I would encourage you to visit our school as it is impossible to capture our ethos and unique character in words and photographs.

I look forward to welcoming you to Penmaes.

Congratulations to the Bikes Across Wales Team

12 cyclists from Brecon, including 2 teachers from Ysgol Penmaes, Dave Coombs Assistant Head teacher and James McQueen class teacher, cycled 243 miles from Holyhead on Anglesey to Cardiff to raise money to support the work of the Friends of Ysgol Penmaes.

Day one started on a damp Tuesday morning (1st June) in Holyhead on Anglesey the cyclists rode through the town with the longest name in Wales Llanfairpwyllgwyngyllgogerchwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and the castle towns of Caernarfon and Harlech to Tremadog and a night in Eric Jones’s bunkhouse. Most of the 65mile route followed the Welsh Highland railway and was fairly flat!!

Day two also started on the flat coastal route visiting Harlech, Barmouth and along the Mawddach estuary to Dolgellau. This is where the hills began!! Leaving Dolgellau the Sustrans route 8 climbed steeply through the foothills of Cader Idris down into Aberllefenni and Corris before returning to Powys in Machynlleth. The biggest hill was still to come between Machynlleth and Staylittle where we stayed in Powys CC’s outdoor education centre after 61miles in the saddle.

Day three took the group to Llanidloes, Rhyader and Builth Wells to Brecon a distance of 67 miles.

Day four started in Cardiff Bay at the start of the Taf trail which was followed to Pontypridd where the old A 470 took the group to a welcome lunch stop at Abercanaid. Sustrans route 8 then took the group (joined by 4 additional cyclists) via Torpantau down to Llanfrynnach.

The cyclists were then given a police escort through Brecon Town centre to Ysgol Penmaes where they were met by the Mayor of Brecon David Meredith, family and friends ,pupils and parents from the school and members of The Friends of Penmaes School. There was a welcome cup of tea and biscuit as well!!
